A teenager from Gaigat, raped by a neighbor, tries to kill himself

Kolkata: A class X student who was returning home from a private lesson was dragged and raped by a neighbor Haygata in North 24 Parganas on Saturday after the 15-year-old girl rejected his offer of a relationship. It became known about the event only after a rape victim tried to kill herself, after which the young man was detained.
The girl is undergoing treatment at Bongaon Jiban Ratan Dhar Subdivisional Hospital.
The accused, identified as Sujit Pal alias Babuson, was detained by the police for four days after he was brought to the Bongaon court on Sunday.
According to local sources, Pal, who is married and lives in Shimulpur Gaigata, had been stalking the girl for almost one and a half years. Her parents and neighbors repeatedly warned him to stay away from her.
“Pal was desperate to have an illicit relationship with my daughter. He even threatened her with dire consequences if she didn’t agree,” said the girl’s father.
On Saturday night, as the teenager was driving home, Pal kidnapped her on his motorcycle. “He tied her hands with a scarf and took her to an abandoned place, where he raped her. At night she tried to hang herself and I managed to stop her. Then she burst into tears and told me about her suffering,” the girl’s mother said, adding that the accused’s family even offered them money so that they would not report the incident to the police.
The girl’s family rushed to the Gaigata police station and filed an FIR against Pal.
“Soon after receiving the statement, we arrested the accused and brought him to court. The girl was sent to the hospital for medical examination and her confidential statement was recorded,” said a senior police officer.
