Police have received a new sexual assault complaint against Alex Salmond

Salmond was acquitted of serious sex offenses after a trial in 2020.

He was charged with 13 offences, including attempted rape, but was acquitted on all counts after two weeks of evidence at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The women who made allegations against Salmond, which date back to his time as First Minister, included an SNP politician, a party worker and several current and former civil servants and Scottish Government officials.

During his testimony in court, Salmond said the claims about his alleged behavior were “deliberate fabrications for political purposes” or “exaggerations.”

Salmond’s lawyer told the court the former first minister “definitely could have been a better person” but had committed no crimes.

He said that his client sometimes misbehaved, calling him an “expert”.

Two subsequent inquiries into the conduct of ministers and officials revealed that Salmond had revealed his belief that many in his former party had conspired against him in an attempt to block his return to mainstream politics.
