Fighting Walleye win fifth straight, third under new coach

Dryden’s Eli Antoine scored five goals in the Ice Dogs’ 10-2 win over Ironwood.

OLIVER PIPUNG – The Cam River Fighting Walleye are digging into the new era of Larry Wintonic.

The defending regular-season champions won their third straight under the veteran coach with a 5-1 rout of the Fort Frances Lakers on Saturday for the team’s fifth straight MHL win.

Daxton Lang had a goal and an assist and Jett Mintenko added four helpers to lead the Fighting Walleye (10-5-0) to the win. Edwin Liang, Evan Lahimea, Amar Powar and Caden Goodwin also scored for Cam River.

The only away goal for the Lakers came from Piers Guen, who could only get one of 28 shots past Cam River goaltender Ashton Sadauskas. Nolan Ketler took the loss in goal for Fort Frances, making 34 of the Fighting Walleye’s 39 shots his way.

Cam River is back on the road next Saturday and Sunday for a pair of games against the Dryden Ice Dogs.

Dryden 10, Ironwood 2: Eli Antoine scored five goals to lead the Ice Dogs to a lopsided win over the Lumberjacks. Max Roby had a pair for Dryden, tying Ironwood’s Nolan Fowler.

Sioux Lookout 4, Thunder Bay 2: Eric Blasino scored the game-winning goal at 11:46 of the third after Thunder Bay’s Alex Remenda tied the score at 11:46 of the third.

Caden Weller added an empty-netter to end the game. Evan Simeoni with his 11thousand of the season, scoring another goal at Thunder Bay. Ty Love and Brodie Wood also scored away for the Bombers, who have won four straight against Thunder Bay this season.
