Lewis Hamilton pleads with F1 to improve wet running amid Brazil Grand Prix disruption

Lewis Hamilton called Formula 1 to provide “better tires” to guarantee better performance in wet conditions, possibly amid disruptions in Grand Prix of Sao Paulo.

Due to persistent torrential rain and thunderstorms in the area, the traditional one-hour qualifying session in Brazil could not be held on Saturday afternoon as planned.

The FIA postponed the start time several times for nearly two hours when the decision was made to delay qualifying until Sunday morning.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali was conducting an interview to explain the decision when Hamilton interrupted to make clear his displeasure at the choice not to go.

Hamilton, a well-known wet-weather expert, pleaded with the Italian to make sure tire manufacturer Pirelli created compounds that could handle standing water.

“You should have sent us out, this is ridiculous, we have to get out! I want to get out,” Hamilton admitted.

“If you give us better wet tires or blankets, we can run in this! I’m putting you in your place.”

The exchange proved to be a cordial encounter as they embraced and Domenicali went on to apologize to the spectators who remained in the stands.

“First of all, let me say again that these fans are incredible,” he added.

“As you know we can’t control the weather and that’s a shame, but the conditions are dangerous to drive, it’s that simple.

“There is also a problem with the light. So, unfortunately, this is a situation we have to deal with.”

In view of the adverse weather conditions expected on Sunday, the FIA has also announced that the start time of the race will be earlier at 12:30 local time (15:30 GMT).

Hamilton previously revealed he was planning extreme set-up changes to his Mercedes after enduring a dreadful sprint that saw him come home 11th.

“Terribly! To be honest, today was very terrible, even worse than in qualifying,” he complained.

“It was definitely a very difficult race, it was one of the worst races. I felt the car was just sliding and even behind the Williams there was no grip.

“I could barely keep up with them for a certain period of time. A lot of work needs to be done to try to change the car, turn it on its head for quality.”
