Rohit Sharma defends approach after ill-advised dismissal: I have to get runs too

Rohit Sharma defends his own approach while batting in the second innings after the India captain was bowled by a reckless throw in Mumbai on Sunday, November 3. Rohit tried to attack the New Zealand bowling during India’s chase and struggled to pull it off.

First, Rohit gets a boundary from Matt Henrybut a similar attempt failed and he rolled the ball straight to Glenn Phillips. This would start the downfall for the Indian batting order as they went to 29 for 5 before Rishabh Pant’s fifty kept them in the hunt. However, Pant’s dismissal was the final nail in the coffin New Zealand won the match by 25 runs to beat India 3-0. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Rohit said that runs are also needed at the end of the day and that was the reason behind his approach.

IND vs New Zealand 3rd Test in Mumbai: Highlights

The Indian captain said the approach didn’t break away at the end of the day and wasn’t looking for it at the end.

“You also want a wound on the board, that’s what was in my head (about his own fight today), it didn’t work out and when it happens it doesn’t look great. I have certain ideas don’t remember when I take the bat but it didn’t work out in this series and that’s disappointing for me,” said Rohit.

Rohit scored 11 runs in the second innings to end a terrible run for him.

The goal was achievable

Rohit said the loss was hard to digest and New Zealand eventually got the better of them. The Indian captain admitted that they made a lot of mistakes during the series and felt that they were ahead when they took the lead in Mumbai.

Rohit said he felt the goal was achievable in the end.

“Losing a series, losing a test is never easy, it’s something that’s hard to digest. Again, we haven’t played our best cricket, we know that and we have to accept that. They (New Zealand) did it much better than we did. We made a lot of mistakes and we have to accept that. We didn’t make enough runs in the first innings (in Bengaluru and Pune) and here we got 30-. leading we thought we were ahead, the target was also within reach but we should have done better,” said Rohit.

It was the first time India had won at home in a 3-match Test series.
