The police charged a resident of New Town with the murder of his cousin Andriy Tarasenko, a resident of Rockland

A New Town man was arrested Monday after police say he shot and killed his cousin in Herkimer County.

New York State Police said Nikolai S. Tazin, 23, of New City, allegedly shot and killed his cousin Andriy Tarasenko, 50, of Congers outside a Warren residence around 8 a.m. on Oct. 20. The state police was previously informed that Tazin is Tarasenko’s nephew.

According to police, both men were injured during an argument before the shooting.

Herkimer State Police arrested Zein at the scene after witnesses said he used a shotgun to kill Tarasenko after the victim tried to flee in his car. Tarasenko was pronounced dead at the scene in his car.

Tazin was taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica, where he was treated for injuries sustained in the earlier altercation. He was released from the hospital and taken to the state police facility in Herkimer, where he was charged with second-degree murder and arraigned later that day.

According to state data, Tarasenko was a brother Anastasia Karasyka New Town resident and leader of the Rockland chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Her daughter Larisa Karasyk, 13-year-old died after a drunk driver hit her father’s car in the same city of Warren in 2015.

Larisa Strong, the family’s foundation for drunk driving awareness posted a memorial to Tarasenko on Instagram Monday after the murder.
