King’s Lynn bricklayer Kieran Mace made a ‘serious mistake’ by drink-driving a van on River Lane

King’s Lynn bricklayer Kieran Mace made a ‘serious mistake’ by drink-driving a van on River Lane

A self-employed bricklayer may have to make workers redundant after losing his driving license in court this week.

Kieran Mace, 34, of Elsing Drive, Lynn, admitted drink-driving on River Lane in the town on September 14 when he appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Prosecutor Asif Akram said police spotted a Ford Transit van driving erratically. They stopped the car and asked the driver to take a roadside breathalyzer test, which was positive.

A breathalyzer test at the police station later showed that Mayes, who was the driver of the van, had 73mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit is 35mcg.

In mitigation, George Sorrell explained that Maze is a self-employed mason who is responsible for organizing nine other subcontractors who work with him on various sites.

“He is responsible for leading them. He collects them and delivers them to different places. Now he might have to fire some of those people if he can’t drive,” Mr Sorrell said.

“It’s going to cause him a lot of trouble and he’ll probably have to arrange for someone else to drive him.”

He said the incident happened after Mace made the decision to get behind the wheel after falling out with his partner.

“He had an argument with his partner that day, he did the right thing by going out to cool off – unfortunately getting into the van was the wrong thing to do as he had been drinking. He now realizes that was a serious mistake,” Mr Sorrell said.

Magistrates banned Mace for 17 months, but that can be reduced by 17 weeks if he completes a rehabilitation course. He was also fined £672 with £85 costs and £269 costs.
