An 8-year-old boy in Florida was seriously injured after a Sarasota police officer crashed his patrol car into him on Monday, an incident captured on body camera.

Gerard Butler, 8, had just received the minibike as an early birthday present the weekend before the accident. He started riding it home after being scared of police activity in his neighborhood, his mother, Regina Sanders, said CBS affiliate WTSP.

An officer in a patrol car who had left the scene on another call struck the boy around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 28, Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche said at a news conference. The the police department also shared graphic body cam footage online.

One video shows an unnamed police officer making a left turn at an intersection, driving through a stop sign without trying to come to a complete stop, before speeding up and hitting the child. The officer then gets out of his patrol car and Butler can be seen lying on the ground a good distance away from the car.

“The cops, you just see them flying, at least going 60 miles, and they don’t care about stop signs, just flying down the roads,” Sanders told WTSP. “I was inside and I heard something scraping and then you see a little minibike.”

In the video, the officer calls for backup and emergency medical help as a crowd of panicked neighbors forms. The police, meanwhile, do some CPR but can’t find a defibrillator.

The child was taken to Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital, where she was treated for serious injuries. early release by the police. Sanders told WTSP earlier this week that her son has undergone two brain surgeries and knee surgery, and is scheduled to have jaw surgery.

In the Wednesday update from ABC affiliate WWSB, Sanders said her son had only moved his legs slightly and coughed since he was admitted to the hospital.

“I’ve never been through anything like this before,” Sanders said.

Police told WTSP the officer was uninjured but shaken by the incident. Currently, the investigation is ongoing, he is in custody.
