Ohio officers charged: A step toward justice in Frank Tyson’s death

Two Ohio police officers have been indicted by a grand jury in the death of black man Frank Tyson after a controversial police restraint incident. This case drew parallels with the high-profile murder of George Floyd in 2020.

Officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Birch, both 24, of the Canton Police Department, have been charged with negligent homicide. Tyson, 53, died after being taken into custody by police following an alleged hit-and-run incident on April 18. Stark County District Attorney Kyle Stone emphasized that no one is exempt from the law and everyone deserves to be protected.

The incident has drawn comparisons to Floyd’s death, as the video shows Tyson being held and repeating, “I can’t breathe.” The case drew significant attention and was called an extremely rare indictment, and Tyson’s family attorney, Bobby DiCello, called it an important step toward justice.
