Suspect in attack on Utah tech worker caught on camera fleeing scene after police arrived

Utah Tech police have arrested a sexual assault suspect who was caught on camera fleeing the scene.

Police confirmed that the victims of the attacks on Friday morning were young female students living on campus.

After a Halloween celebration on campus, a former student allegedly gained unauthorized access to dorm rooms, raising serious concerns about student safety.

KUTV spoke with Police Chief Wes LiCalzi about the ongoing investigation and the university’s response to support students and increase campus security.

According to police, the suspect — 22-year-old Alex Barajas — obtained a key card to access the campus building and entered three separate rooms at the Campus View Suites I dormitory.

Utah Tech students Noah and Hunter expressed their shock at the incidents.

“It’s just horrible,” Noah said.

“It’s something that definitely shouldn’t happen,” Hunter said. “Of course, that’s disappointing to hear. That’s something that needs to be fixed.”

Police reports indicated that around 3 a.m., after a Halloween dance, Barajas allegedly targeted three female students.

LiCalzi explained that the first call came from one of the victims, and when police arrived, two more victims came forward.

“The other two have already happened. And then when the officer arrived, which was very quick, the suspect . . . escaped from another exit,” Likalzi said.

Although the building requires a key card, LiCalzi noted that individual dorm rooms were likely left unlocked, allowing the suspect to enter. The victims lived on the same floor of the dormitory, although it is not known if they knew each other personally.

“Obviously, they need support right now,” LiCalzi said. “We spent time talking to parents and the different resources they have, setting up trauma-informed interviews.”

The police chief also stressed the importance of campus security and urged students to remain vigilant.

“We tried to simplify the call to us as much as possible. We just need that call to help,” he said. “Situational awareness is key; being aware of your surroundings can make a big difference.”

Anyone with additional information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Utah Tech Police Department at 435-627-4300.

Students affected by the events or seeking support can find counseling and resources at the Utah Tech Wellness Center by stopping by or calling 435-652-7755.

The suspect had a previous conviction, although not at the university. He was charged with three counts of rape, three counts of burglary, two counts of lewdness and one count of criminal trespass.

The Utah Tech Police Department continues to investigate and additional updates will be provided as they become available.
