Avon, Rocky River issue last four tickets – Morning Journal

Avon is headed to the Final Four.

The Eagles defeated St. Ursula Academy of Toledo 3-1 in the Division II Region 6 final to win their program’s first regional championship in school history.

“We finally broke through and punched the ticket,” Avon coach Attila Cisar said. “We were in the elite eight, but to get to the final four is huge. The girls worked so hard for this.”

Avon advanced to the Division II state semifinals on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. The Eagles will face Columbus Bishop Watterson, who defeated Whitehouse Anthony Wayne, 1-0.

It’s been a tough season for Avon, as it has scheduled some of the toughest programs in Ohio. The Eagles didn’t come out on top in some of those games, but learned a lot from them to get to this point in the season.

“Nothing was easy for them. Now they are gelling and driving the ball well,” Chisar said.

Avon improved to 12-4-3, while the Arrows finished 10-6-3.

As attractive as a 2-0 lead may look, it is often dangerous.

Avon were leading 2-0 in the situation but lost a player to two yellow cards. Chisar said his team had to go all out to hang on.

Skylar Krushka scored two goals for the Eagles in the first half. In the second half, Notre Dame’s Gianna Scott (midfielder) scored on a free kick for a 3-0 lead.

“(Scott) is a high-level player and she understands at a high level,” Chisar said. “It was nice to have the center of the park controlling the tempo of the game. She and Izzy Fusco really do a great job.”

Rocky River win in Division III

Rocky River defeated John Glenn’s New Concord, 9-1, in Coshocton. The Pirates advanced to the Division III state semifinals and will face Bay.

It will be a rematch of last year’s Division II state semifinal, which Rocky River won in a shootout at Avon. The game will take place on November 5 at 19:00.

Rocky River scored four goals in the first half and led 4-0 at halftime.
