A SURFER was mauled to death by a shark off the coast of Maui, Hawaii, in a terrifying attack.

The 61-year-old man, identified as Kenji, was surfing near Waiehu Beach Park on Friday morning when he was bitten by a shark.

His right leg was completely severed just below the knee, a Maui County press release said.

Police officers who arrived at the scene initially tried to stop the bleeding with tourniquets.

Kenji, a local resident of the area who regularly visited the beach for surfing, said he did not see the shark approach while he was being treated.

He was then taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

This was told by David Bask, who witnessed the terrible incident Hawaii News Now: “I heard this scream and I looked and all of a sudden I just (saw) him splashing and I don’t know what’s going on.

“He swam back maybe more than half way and then I (saw) somebody jump and they went (to) bring him in.”

The authorities were forced to close the beach park after the attack. All people were warned to stay away from the water in the area.

Maui Fire and Ocean officials were seen patrolling the waters with rescue boats and a drone.

State officials posted shark warning signs and helped fence off the area.

No details have been released about which shark it is.
