Report: Commanders look at CB trade at NFL trade deadline amid Jayden Daniels’ 6-2 start | News, results, highlights, stats and rumours

The Washington Commanders are in the market for a cornerback as Tuesday’s trade deadline approaches, trans Dianna Russini The Athletic.

“No wonder the red-hot Washington command is looking for a corner,” Russini wrote.

“Coach Dan Quinn knows that’s a weakness on his roster, and at 6-2, Washington needs help if they want to get past the Philadelphia Eagles and their formidable group of receivers in the NFC East.”

The East-leading NFC teams are 6-2, a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles heading into Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Ben Standig The Athletic released an update on the Commanders at the Oct. 30 trade deadline, mentioning the cornerback in particular.

“Multiple sources around the league told The Athletic that they have heard little about Washington this term or that the team has been linked to any specific names. According to the head of the other team’s front office, the front office is willing to listen, especially at cornerback. , but there is no sense that activism is brewing.”

Still, Standig made sure to take a long-term view, noting that this is “the first year of a multi-year plan focused on the long-term struggle, not the pursuit of instant gratification.”

Commanders are playing with the money on the house right now after an unexpected start. They haven’t won more than 10 games in a season since 1991. Washington needs to build a foundation for sustained excellence, and giving away any important picks to another figure might not be the smartest choice to achieve that goal.

General manager Adam Peters does have 10 picks in the 2025 draft, including four top-100 picks, according to Standig. So maybe there is a choice to burn, but the question is whether it’s a smart move going forward.

On the other hand, this team is special. Daniels is an electric talent who could develop into one of the league’s superstars for years to come. It’s entirely possible that the Commanders will be tied for first place in the NFC standings after Sunday. If there’s a chance to compete for a Super Bowl, why not take it?

The Commanders have also made waves elsewhere, with CBS Sports Jonathan Jones reporting that “Washington has scoured the receiver market to potentially give Terry McLaurin some help as he makes a playoff push.”

Ultimately, Washington will need more help on the back end. The team allowed 6.3 net yards per pass attempt, ranking 22nd in the league in Professional football guide.

And another wide out alongside McLaurin could be useful. Only two wide receivers (McLaurin and Noah Brown) have more than 176 receiving yards through eight games.

So the Commanders are definitely a team to watch as the deadline approaches. They currently look to improve to 7-2 on the road against the 2-6 New York Giants on Sunday.
