Indianapolis east side shooting: 1 dead, 1 in critical condition

A man was fatally shot on the east side Friday night, 180thousand homicide in Indianapolis this year.

Police were dispatched to the 3600 block of North Dearborn Street around 7 p.m. for a report of shots fired, but found nothing. Minutes later, two blocks away in the 3500 block of North LaSalle Street, they spotted two injured men, according to a news release from Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

One victim suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital in critical condition, while the other suffered a cut, according to IMPD.

The gunshot victim later died. His name and age have not been released until the Marion County Coroner has officially identified him and notified his family. The police did not arrest anyone.

The 180 homicides this year surpass the total of 174 for all of 2023.

According to monthly data provided by IMPD, police have so far solved 65 cases, for a 36.6% solve rate. But this year, police have solved 45 homicides in the past year, according to IMPD.

The number of homicides last year was down from 2022, when 226 people were killed, and 2021, when a record 271 people were killed.
