An ambulance partially submerged in a collapsed road after a crash on Halloween night, police say

Oviedo, FloridaAn ambulance is stuck on a broken road in Oviedo after a crash on Halloween night that police say was caused by a drunk driver.

The incident began when Robert William Garcia, 32, allegedly crashed into three cars and crashed into a fire hydrant near East Mitchell Hammock Road, city officials said. The crash broke the hydrant’s shut-off valve, flooding the street and causing a road collapse that stopped an ambulance arriving at the scene.

Local resident Julie Geary recalled hearing the crash. “I heard a woman yelling, ‘Get out of the car and call 911,'” Geary said.

Another witness, Bill Holstein, said he saw water flooding the street when city crews arrived to contain the damage. “We saw a river of water coming out and all the commotion with the city trucks trying to fix it,” he said.

Officials say one injured person and first responders had to be rescued from an ambulance, which was later towed from the scene. Police said Garcia initially claimed someone else had hit him, but footage from a parked car showed his car was at fault in the collision.

“It was scary because my daughter is 11 and we just got back from a treat game,” Geary added. “We were unloading right where it happened.”

Garcia is charged with driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a DUI test. The ambulance was towed to the city utility service for repairs.
