A policeman was injured while chasing a car suspected of theft

A police officer was injured during a car chase involving a suspected burglar, police said.

The car was stopped by a police vehicle in Shildon, County Durham, on Thursday during a “tactical contact”, Durham Police said.

Two men, aged 21 and 25, were detained at the scene.

The police helicopter and the Road and Armed Police Unit were involved in the pursuit through Chilton Ferryhill.

Police said the vehicle did not have its headlights on and was traveling at a high rate of speed on the wrong side of the road in places.

“Tactical contact” involved running into a vehicle in order to stop it.

The 21-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving, driving without a license, failure to stop and no insurance.

A 25-year-old passenger was detained on suspicion of theft.

Both remain in police custody.

The police continue to search for two men who fled the scene.

The law enforcement officers did not provide more details about the officer’s injuries.
