A firefighter was seriously injured after falling 40 feet from a window while fighting a five-alarm fire at a Manhattan apartment building, according to the FDNY.

A smoke eater was walking back down the stairs of a six-story building that caught fire in Hamilton Heights when he accidentally fell from a fifth-story window into a shaft behind the building, officials and sources said.

Sources told The Post that the accident happened when a firefighter was pulling a hose.

“He received immediate medical attention at the bottom of the mine from FDNY on-scene physicians and trauma paramedics,” FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker said at a news conference Friday. “Our paramedics, firemen and rescuers got to him very quickly.”

“We were fortunate today because we had a fire department doctor on site as well as elite paramedics,” EMS Chief Michael Fields said at a press conference.

The firefighter is in serious but stable condition at Harlem Hospital, according to the FDNY.

Firefighters battled the blaze, which broke out on the second floor of an apartment building on West 145th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue just after 2:40 p.m., officials said.

FDNY Fire Chief Kevin Woods said strong winds blowing from the front windows started the fire as flames spread up to the sixth floor.

More than 200 firefighters responded to the large-scale fire.
