Miami-Dade firefighter whose son died during training among three who quit – NBC 6 South Florida

A Miami-Dade firefighter whose son died in unauthorized training was among three employees who resigned in June as the fatal fire continues to be investigated.

The Miami-Dade Fire Department confirmed Friday that the layoffs of firefighters Franciso A. Camero, Steven Colon and Rafael Fernandez were effective Oct. 30.

The fatal fire broke out June 21 in a three-story building in the 6500 block of Northwest 36th Street in Virginia Gardens.

Fabian CameroFrancisco Camero’s 28-year-old son was rushed to hospital with serious injuries and died a day later.

The tragic death triggered a multi-agency effort a probe that remains open.

Camero, a certified medical professional, was not employed by Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue. Why he was at the training in the first place is being clarified.

The agency, along with a group of international firefighters, were training in the building that day, despite the fact that its headquarters had a training base only three miles away.

At the time, the building’s owner told NBC6 they had a verbal agreement with the department to allow them to conduct “non-destructive” training.

Three people have resigned after a firefighter’s son died during an unauthorized fire-rescue drill in June, Miami-Dade County Public Safety Chief James Reyes confirmed to NBC6 on Friday.

In August, Miami-Dade County Public Safety Chief James Reyes confirmed that his department did not authorize the training.

NBC6 was unable to reach former fire officials for comment.

We’ve also reached out to the state’s fire chief for an update on their investigation and what it could mean for the three firefighters now that they’ve resigned. A spokesperson told us they are looking into the matter.

NBC6 is requesting public records related to this exercise, as well as any incident reports detailing what first responders found at the scene.
