Mustafa Bush trial: A look at Bush’s prior 2006 murder conviction – ABC 6 News

The ABC 6 news team presents the day’s local, regional and national news, detailed events and breaking news, as well as the latest sports news, weather updates, including an extended forecast.

(ABC 6 News) — ABC 6 News last week covered the trial of Mustafa Bush, who is accused of murdering Kimberly Robinson in December 2022.

However, one detail was omitted during the trial by court order: a prior conviction for 2nd degree murder, which Bush now wants expunged.

Like Bush the current litigation appears to be coming to an endhere’s a look back at the timeline of his previous convictions.

May 6, 2006: Corey Richardson, 24, was shot to death at his home on Weatherstone Circle in northwest Rochester. Inside were three children and his wife, Odumne Richardson. Mustafa Bush, 22, was taken to St. Marys Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. Rochester firefighters respond to a report of a van fire, later identified as the Richardson family’s vehicle.

May 8, 2006: Rochester Police Capt. Brian Winters says all three incidents on May 6 are likely related. “The investigation indicates that the suspects, identified as black males, entered the residence prior to the shooting, shortly after entering the residence, the victim was confronted in the bedroom and shots were fired, resulting in his death,” Winters said.

Winters added that witnesses at the scene said two or more black men ran from the residence — one of whom hobbled to a passenger van, which was later found “on fire.”

Bush was taken into custody in “satisfactory condition”.

Just a few weeks earlier, on April 22, 2006, Bush was shot in the head in an incident he refused to describe to the police. No charges were brought.

May 9, 2006: The district attorney’s office is asking for the criminal charges against Bush to go forward because he is still in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. Bush is undergoing surgery due to an injury.

May 10, 2006: Bush is charged with two counts of second-degree murder. The court documents refer to the law enforcement authorities’ understanding of the events of May 6. He was officially brought to court on May 11.

Bush’s charging documents allege he was at a hotel with Corey Richardson’s wife the night before the murder, and she asked Bush to help get Richardson out of their home.

An autopsy on Richardson’s body revealed two gunshot wounds, one to the abdomen and the other to the lower back and buttocks.

May 16, 2006: Rochester police arrested and charged Leah Quam in connection with the murder, saying her van may have been used to take Bush to the hospital on May 6, and she may also be connected to the fire in the Richardson family’s van that was found several miles from the scene of the murder. On May 25, she will stand trial on charges of aiding and abetting Bush’s murder.

Quam pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact in September 2006, agreed to testify against Bush and received a 20-year suspended sentence. The conviction was later declared a misdemeanor, and Kwama’s probation expired in 2017.

July 5, 2006: Bush pleads not guilty to both murder charges.

July 8, 2006: Minneapolis police arrest Parnell Johnson in the Twin Cities. Olmsted County has filed a warrant for Johnson’s arrest in connection with the murder, as the alleged second man in the room when Richardson was killed.

Police believe Quam, pictured above, took Johnson to buy gas and also set Richardson’s van on fire.

He pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting 2nd degree murder in January 2007 and agreed to testify against Bush and Odum Richardson as shown below.

“We confronted him with a gun,” Johnson said during the hearing, according to a previous report by ABC 6 News.

“Richardson woke up and tried to get out of bed. That’s when Johnson used the shotgun to hit Richardson in the shoulder, Johnson said.

“There was a struggle. The gun went off and Bush was hit in the leg; Bush then fired the gun at Richardson, Johnson said.

Johnson was later sentenced to 141 months.

July 11, 2006: Police arrest Odam Richardson for her role in Corey Richardson’s murder. Police say Odum Richardson was an accessory to murder.

She pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter in February 2007 and was sentenced Aug. 13 to 180 months — after saying she misses her husband very much and loves him very much, according to previous messages.

April 4, 2007: Bush pleads guilty to one count of 2nd degree felony murder.

April 18, 2007 — Bush was sentenced to 250 months, or 20.8 years of imprisonment. Under Minnesota state statute, he must serve at least two-thirds of the term (about 14 years) before applying for parole. He is credited with 348 days spent in custody before sentencing. Bush was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and $435.65 to Cory Richardson’s relative.

October 3, 2024: Bush appeals for compensation after conviction in 2006 murder case.

October 16, 2024 — Judge Joseph A. Bueltel grants Bush’s earlier appeal, beginning the process of trying to “overturn” the 2006 murder conviction, citing Bush’s argument that “he did not cause the death of the person, he claims he was not a primary participant in the underlying crime at the heart of the crime for which he was convicted, and he claims that he did not act with extreme indifference to human life.”
