The new “Baraga County Youth Mentoring Program” aims to help the youth of the county

L’ANCE, Mich. (WLUC) – A new youth mentoring program in Baraga County is in its infancy.

“We’re just trying to match youth with adults who have similar interests, and we’re asking them to try to spend time together once a week,” said Dawn Howe, Baraga County Juvenile Services.

The program was developed by Howe and Baraga County Prevention Contractor Heather Tapani. Positive role models and experiences are needed for the young people the court works with, Tapani says. In the statement she writes:

“From my experience working with young people, I noticed that many of them lack attention to their education and try to see their own potential. They often lack the support systems they need to thrive… sometimes youth are surrounded by family and friends who share the same negative behaviors or lack certain life skills, leaving them without positive role models. guide them

Howe notes that community resources for these teens are “few,” and they can’t always get resources in places like Houghton or Marquette. The program hopes to meet this need.

Mentors would show support, respect privacy and even participate in activities with mentees. Howe says potential mentors shouldn’t be put off trying because of past mistakes.

“We have a lot of adults who may have had a blemish or two in the past, but are still great people who have a lot to offer,” Howe added. “I see a lot of people who maybe have these things coaching ball teams who are great parents to their kids. You have something to offer.”

However, applicants will still undergo a background check. Applications can be found at the Baraga County Probate Office or emailed to [email protected].
