Patti LuPone can’t wait to see the Lumberjack musical Sunset Blvd.

Patti LuPoneAndrew Lloyd Webber fired her from the role of Norma Desmond in the 1993 London production. Sunset Boulevardis putting aside old grudges – sort of, sort of – and plans to see Jamie Lloyd’s new film Broadway production next Wednesday.

In LuPone’s incredibly timely appearance on ABC View the former Evita was at her most candid today, offering a backhanded “compliment” about Broadway’s hot new Sunset revival with Nicole Scherzinger as Norma.

First, a bit of background. In 1993, LuPone performed the role of Norma Desmond in the original London production by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Sunset Boulevarddirected by Trevor Nunn. The project was the result of LuPone and Lloyd Webber reuniting after their huge success Evitabut history did not repeat itself: LuPone was suddenly fired by the composer, who was later hired by Glenn Close to open the show in Los Angeles and later on Broadway.

LuPone was signed to open productions in both Los Angeles and Broadway, and the money she received from the deal went to a good cause: she has since named the pool at her Connecticut estate the “Andrew Lloyd Webber Memorial Pool.”

“I can’t wait to see it!” she said, adding that she was scheduled to attend the show next Wednesday.

“I’m very interested to see what Jamie Lloyd has done with it,” she said, before adding that she wished talented directors like Lloyd would focus on “original material, supporting new playwrights, new composers and lyricists instead of what we saw.”

“But I’m interested in seeing it,” she said, adding, “It’s a heavy musical,” here she intoned the word logging as if he was carrying Agatha All Along curse. “It’s always been that way, so I’m interested to see what he’s going to do to make it less of that logging.”

With that, she burst into her signature laugh, but stopped when co-host Joy Behar mentioned the good reviews for the new production.

“Well, we’ll see,” LuPone said. “Tastes don’t count.”
