WTAPS publicized his role on New balance 998originally released in 1993, and the first New Balance model to boast the signature ABZORB sole. The iconic Japanese brand, founded by Tetsu Nishiyama in 1997, is known for moving rather low-key, and its upcoming 998 continues that tradition by subtly changing the model.

At first glance, the updates to the silhouette from WTAPS can be overlooked, especially since the brand chose to keep the signature silver and gray color palette and overall New Balance design. While the original 998 featured embossed leather detailing, the WTAPS opts for a more naturalistic snakeskin-like leather accent, best showcased on the embroidered “998” tongue. In addition, joint wordmarks are hidden inside the insoles, and “WTAPS VISUAL UPARMORED” appears in a small inconspicuous font along the suede heels.

Aside from the subtle changes, the model pays homage to the original model with its mesh toe box and collar covered in pigskin suede panels that soften the tech style. Eye-catching lacquered silver detailing draws attention to the heel tab and small N logo on the quarter panel.

The WTAPS x New Balance 998 will be available from November 8th through WTAPS webshop and selected retailers. Sales will be distributed through an online lottery at all stores except WTAPS® (W_Lab) KYOTO. The online lottery is held from Thursday, November 7 to Friday, November 8.
