Greater Sudbury Police did not name the store, but it was reported to be Food Basics in the Flour Mill.

“This was a targeted incident as the suspects were known to each other,” the police said in a statement.

Police said officers were called just before 7:30 p.m. about a gun complaint.

“Information was provided that two persons approached the man at the self-checkout counter, where one of the persons shot the man,” the police said. “All individuals involved fled, including the man who was shot.”

The victim, a 31-year-old man, was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

When officers arrived, they found one of the suspects involved in the shooting. “The person was taken into custody and charged; however, it was established that the shooter was not that person,” the police said.

But thanks to information received during the investigation, the police went to the house on nearby Baker Street. When they got there, “officers saw an individual matching the description of the shooter. The subject immediately fled on foot and was located by K9 Roy and his handler.

“Officers also recovered a firearm believed to have been used during the incident.”

The suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized handling of a weapon and pointing a firearm.

He is also charged with willful use of a firearm, reckless handling of a firearm, knowing the fact of unauthorized possession of a firearm, violation of the order of release and possession of a prohibited firearm.

The teenager was held in police custody overnight and was due to appear in court on Friday on bail to answer the charges.

His name cannot be released under the provisions of the Juvenile Criminal Justice Act because he is too young.

The second suspect is a 22-year-old boy. He is charged with attempted murder, unauthorized possession of a firearm and obstructing the police.

He was held overnight and was due to appear on bail on Friday. Police said his name cannot be released at this time because the information has not yet been filed under oath in the lawsuit.

Police also took the time to “acknowledge and thank our officers and members of the 9-1-1 Emergency Call Center for their swift and coordinated response to a high-risk situation where two dangerous and violent criminals were arrested and charged.”
