Based on a true story (2023-)

Ava sits on the kitchen floor with blood splattered on the road behind her in Based on a True Story.
Colleen Hayes / Peacock

With Season 2 coming at the end of November, it’s the perfect time to get through all eight short episodes of Season 1 Based on a true story. The darkly comedic thriller is a hilarious take on the lives of a married couple desperately trying to keep up with their wealthy elite friends. But each of them is going through their own professional crisis as they await the birth of their child and try to figure out how they will be able to afford to care for her. However, Ava Bartlett’s (Kaley Cuoco) obsession with true crime podcasts presents an opportunity in the most whimsical way.

When a serial killer is on the loose in their town and her amateur detective skills help her identify him as someone they know, a light bulb goes off. Instead of turning him into the police, why not use that knowledge to make a deal with him to talk anonymously on a true crime podcast and they won’t tell. A podcast interviewing a real killer can make him murder! Of course, they also have one small request for a potential new business partner: stop killing people.

Naturally, though, Ava and her husband Nathan (Chris Messina) quickly learn that dealing with a serial killer isn’t exactly easy, and things get bleak. But it’s too late. They’re in too deep now, and if they betrayed him, they’d be involved. Based on a true story has its dark moments, and while the premise is incredible, you can’t help but admire how the magical assassin’s narcissistic ego takes over. The relationship between the unusual trio is sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing.

Gap (2022-)

One of the best new shows of 2022 and possibly this decade, Breaking up is a heart-pounding sci-fi psychological thriller that delivered one of the best season finales we’ve ever seen. Adam Scott is Mark Scout, a man grieving the death of his wife who decides to undergo an experiment. A biotech company will cut out his brain so that he has an “innie” that exists when he’s at work and an “old” one at home. When he enters the building and goes up to his floor, he knows nothing about his life at home.

Conversely, when he leaves the building, his severed brain switches back to “up” and he forgets about work. This is an extremely strict method of imposing a seemingly healthy work-life balance.

When Mark is approached from outside by a man claiming to be his former colleague and warns him that all is not as it seems at Lumon Industries, Mark begins to question what is happening both at home and at work, each time with no clear reason . As he uncovers conspiracies, some of which involve his personal life, everything comes to a head in an explosive finale. Breaking up returns on January 17, 2025 for its second season, so now is a great time to catch up or rewatch season 1 to be prepared for the fallout.

Sweet Pea (2024)

Ella Purnell stares into the camera disheveled and covered in blood in Sweet Pea.
Sky Atlantic / Starz

Described as female Dexter, Sweet peas stars Ella Purnell (yellow jackets, Fallout) as Rhiannon Lewis, a young administrative assistant who struggles to speak up for herself and mostly feels ignored. This is not a figment of her imagination, because all her life she was bullied and relegated to the background.

When her father dies, her dog dies, and her old school bully comes back to town, Rhiannon has had enough. She shoots and kills someone. She feels deep regret, but also notices something strange. Her life is starting to improve. She has more confidence, she’s noticed, and the thrill of the kill unleashes the darkness that’s probably been brewing inside her all along.

Sweet peas beautifully acted and, while predictable at times, will draw you in from one episode to the next as you watch Rhiannon’s descent into madness. Rhiannon’s journey from a gentle, unforgettable young woman to a terrifying killer reinforces the saying, “always be quiet.”

Decrease (2023-)

Harrison Ford and Jason Segel sit side-by-side outside in a scene from Downsizing.
Apple TV+

Harrison Ford is an absolute delight in this Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso) comedy-drama in which he stars as Dr. Paul Rhodes, senior therapist and mentor, friend and colleague of Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel). Jimmy, also a therapist, is grieving the death of his wife in a tragic car accident. He’s gone off the rails, neglecting his job and, most importantly, his teenage daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell).

He begins to see the light when he uses unconventional methods with his patients, which seem to work, much to Paul’s objections. But Jimmy slowly begins to recover. However, roadblocks stand in the way of his recovery, including a major one introduced in the second season, which premiered in October 2024.

Downsizing – Season 2 Official Trailer | Apple TV+

Chemistry among the introduced abbreviation and the combination of light-hearted comedy and dark drama makes for a show that adequately fills the huge hole left by Ted Lasso. You’ll notice a lot of similarities in tone and feel, as Lawrence and Brett Goldstein (who played Roy Kent in Ted Lasso and is also counted among its writers) are creators. Goldstein appears on screen in Season 2, giving him the opportunity to showcase his acting range in some of the show’s most heartbreaking scenes. But make no mistake, this show has just as many fun moments that keep you going through a range of emotions from one episode to the next.

Night Agent (2023-)

Lucian Buchanan and Gabriel Basso in the film
Netflix

He sits in a dark room night after night flipping through papers, waiting for one rotary phone to ring. It never happens, until one day he is surprised by a loud ringing. When he answers and hears a frightened young woman named Rose Larkin (Lucian Buchanan) on the other end, he leaves his post and springs into action to investigate and help her. Together, they uncover a massive conspiracy and are forced to flee, not knowing who they can trust.

The twists and turns of the plot, which involve law enforcement, political figures, corporate businessmen and assassins, keep your eyes glued to the screen the whole way through.
