Watch: Texas troopers chase car, find surprising discovery in trunk

Texas soldiers involved in a high speed chase with the suspected people smuggler found 10 migrants trapped inside the car, including at least three in the trunk.

Footage of a pursuit along Interstate 35 in Webb County ended with Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers taking the suspect into custody on October 30.

In October Newsweek reported that border guards faced illegal immigration hotspots along the southern border, where the cameras have been out of service for up to a year.

The chase began when DPS officers spotted a Dodge Charger suspected of transporting immigrants who were in the U.S. illegally.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver, who has been identified as Jaime Gonzalez of Laredo, responded leading officers on a car chase, DPS spokesman Chris Olivares said in a post on X, earlier Twitter.

Gonzalez weaved through parking lots and nearby streets to avoid law enforcement, Olivarez continued.

Using a maneuver, DPS fighters were eventually able to stop the car. During the inspection, they found 10 migrants from Mexico trapped inside the car.including two children aged 8 and 9, the post says.

Olivarez wrote: “Police charged Gonzalez with eight counts of human trafficking with likelihood of serious bodily injury or death, two counts of trafficking in persons under the age of 18, evading arrest with likelihood of serious bodily injury or death, and reckless driving. .”

All 10 people found in the vehicle were turned over to the US Border Patrol for further investigation.

Vice President of the National Border Patrol Council, Hector Garza, announced this earlier Newsweek on malfunctioning cameras along the US-Mexico border: “It’s been a major problem for at least the last eight months.” He added: “We didn’t realize how serious it was. At first we thought it was a problem in the Laredo sector, but we have come to the conclusion that it is a big nationwide problem.”

In October, DPS launched a high-speed chase, eventually apprehending a Guatemalan national suspected of human smuggling after discovering nine migrants in a car.

Immigration and border security are key issues for voters in next week’s election.

Survey by Redfield & Wilton Strategies on behalf of Newsweek found that 68 percent of Americans think the federal government should take more a tough approach to immigration.

According to a Gallup poll, a narrow majority of respondents supported Trump’s main policy on the border wall since he was in the White House, with 53 percent supporting a significant expansion of wall construction along American-Mexican borderwhich is 13 points higher than in 2019.
