An animal rescue in North Carolina has launched a desperate plea to find the family of a dog that no doubt loved people, that was killed in a recent hurricane.

Charlotte-based family rescue Forgotten, Now took in a Great Pyrenees mix that was found near a river after devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Helen.

The dog, which they named River, was found in a completely inaccessible area, but with the help of an all-terrain vehicle, a wildlife officer, a veterinarian and a member of the animal control team, they managed to get him to safety.

“Thinking of everyone out there hurt,” wrote another, while a third said: “I hope he finds his family. I can’t imagine how scared and confused he must be. So many lost pets breaks my heart. I just pray that he still has a family to come home to.”

Hurricane Helen has devastated parts of North Carolina, claiming 95 lives in the state, according to officials.
