PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVE) — A 22-year-old Portsmouth woman has been missing since late August.

Otut Shelton was last seen on River Mill Circle, a street where residents usually feel safe.

“It’s a good place to live; it’s quiet here,” Travis Godwin Sr. said.

Godwin has lived in the area for years and says the area is usually trouble-free.

“The neighborhood is nice — quiet, laid-back,” Godwin said. “We have no problem here.”

Portsmouth police are looking for Shelton, who went missing on Aug. 31. Shelton is a dark-skinned woman with black hair, brown eyes, and usually wears glasses. Police say she is approximately 5-foot-1 and weighs between 160 and 165 pounds.

10 On Your Side asked neighbors if her disappearance was a surprise.

“Yeah, it is, especially in this neighborhood because like I say, and I know you’re going to hear it all the time, nothing ever happens here,” Godwin said.

“It’s very rare to see any police cars or anything in the area other than driving by,” Godwin said. “But other than that, we have no problems.”

Residents tell us they have never heard or seen Shelton.

If you have any information on Shelton’s whereabouts, you are asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
