Bodycam captures moments after fatal crash of motorcyclist by truck driver who fell asleep at the wheel in Miami Beach – WSVN 7News | Miami news, weather, sports

MIAMI BEACH, FL. (WSVN) – Body camera video shows the moments after a motorcyclist was struck and killed by a driver who police say fell asleep at the wheel.

The fatal accident occurred in Miami Beach in the area of Meridian Avenue and 41st Street on April 15.

According to Miami Beach police, the pickup truck was traveling eastbound on 41st Street when it crossed into the westbound lane and struck the motorcycle, sending it and the driver nearly 90 feet away from the crash site.

Dashcam video, obtained exclusively by 7News, shows officials rushing to save the motorcyclist’s life.

“Sir, the fire rescue is on its way, okay?” – said the officer to the victim.

“He’s conscious, he’s breathing, but he’s unresponsive,” the officer said.

Law enforcement officers surrounded the motorcycle driver, who did not respond.

“Do you understand what’s going on?” said the officer.

“Can you speak?” said the officer.

After being hospitalized, the motorcyclist died from his injuries.

The police quickly found the suspect in the fatal accident.

“Are you feeling well?” asked the officer.

“I’m fine. I’m worried about him, said the man.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Patrick Schiebel, showed concern for the victim and stayed by his side at the crime scene.

As officers cleaned up the mess from the wreckage, they let Schiebel walk free after being questioned about the crash.

But four months later, Shibel was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving.

According to police records, the defendant said he was “sleep deprived and had not slept for over 24 hours” and that he “stated he was dozing off prior to the accident.” The defendant also stated that he did not know about the accident until the impact and does not remember how the accident happened.”

7News also obtained surveillance video of his Aug. 8 questioning.

It remains unclear why police did not arrest Shibel the night of the crash, or why it took them months to do so.

But this is not the only investigation into the incident.

Miami Beach Police confirmed to 7News that the case is under internal affairs investigation and that Traffic Homicide Investigator Richard Rodriguez has been transferred pending the outcome of the investigation.

This is the second accident in April 2024 led to an inspection by the internal affairs bodies.

7News followed the development of the story and Road accident with fatal consequences near Miami Beach police headquarters and fired the officer who drove off despite being spotted by nearby witnesses.

Accident on April 28 also led to an arrest Demarcus Harington.

Shibel’s case remains open and he is awaiting trial.

Miami Beach officials said the investigation into the crash caused by Schiebel is ongoing.
