High-speed chase ends in head-on collision with patrol car in North Carolina, deputies say

YANCEY COUNTY, NC (FOX, NC) – The Yancey County Sheriff’s Office says a Virginia man has been charged after leading deputies on a high-speed chase in North Carolina.

A high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle from Virginia began and ended in Yancey County on Oct. 28, according to the sheriff’s office. The pursuit ended when the stolen vehicle crashed head-on into a patrol car near Mountain Heritage High School.

Following the crash, officials said traffic was temporarily halted to facilitate an investigation into the incident. The highway was fully restored and returned to normal traffic about four hours later.

Deputies said Jason Collin Hatcher, 43, of Bristol, Virginia, was arrested and charged with:

  • Fleeing/evading arrest by vehicle
  • Reckless dangerous driving
  • Assault on a public official/employee

Hatcher is currently being held on a $50,000 bond.
