Microsoft shares pricing information for Windows 10 Advanced Security Updates for consumers

Last year, Microsoft Corporation announced Advanced Security Updates Program for Windows 10 which will allow organizations that are not yet ready to upgrade to Windows 11 to continue receiving security updates for the OS after its support ends on October 14, 2025. For the first time, this program will also be available to consumers. using a Windows 10 PC.

Microsoft has already released pricing information for this Enhanced Security Updates program for organizations: Windows 10 updates for a single device will cost $61 per year, and that price will double each year. There will also be special pricing for nonprofits and organizations that choose to receive ESU updates via Intune or Windows Autopatch. However, because enhanced security updates are cumulative, organizations that join the program for a second year will also have to pay for the first year of updates.

Microsoft revealed today how the Windows 10 ESU program will work for consumers who wish to continue using the OS in a secure manner after the end of the support period. This program will only provide security updates for an additional year and can be purchased for $30. The company plans to share more detailed information about registration closer to October 2025.

Windows 11 will remain available as a free upgrade on Windows 10 devices that meet the minimum hardware requirements, including the latest processors with the TPM 2.0 security chip. Windows 10 users can check Windows Update to see if their PC is eligible for the update, and the OS will also begin notifying users about the end of support in October 2025.

Microsoft designed Windows 11 to be more secure with features like Secure Boot, Virtualization-Based Protection, Memory Integrity, and Smart App Control. However, Microsoft says that organizations that take security seriously should consider upgrading their PC fleet.

“New Windows 11 PCs are more secure, with a 62% reduction in security incidents and a three-fold reduction in malware attacks,” said Yusuf Mehdi, executive vice president and director of consumer marketing at Microsoft. “At a high price, Copilot+ PC provide even more protection, including memory-based integrity, secure PC core capabilities, enhanced Windows Hello sign-in security, and Microsoft’s Pluton Security embedded processor.”

While Windows 10 will end support in a year, Microsoft continuing to add new features to the OS, such as the new Copilot assistant. Earlier this year, the Windows Insider Program also featured a new beta channel for Windows 10 users interested in trying new features for Windows 10 version 22H2, which is the latest version of the OS.
