East Brookfield house fire kills wheelchair-bound resident – Boston News, Weather, Sports

EAST BROOKFIELD, MASS. (WHDH) – An East Brookfield man died in a fire at his home Thursday morning.

East Brookfield Fire and Police crews were dispatched to West Main Street just after 3:30 a.m. after a 9-1-1 call alerted them to a structure fire with flames through the roof.

“The first company to arrive on the scene immediately went to extinguish the fire and locate the occupant they believed to be inside,” the state fire marshal’s office said in a statement. “This resident, an adult in a wheelchair, was discovered and removed from the home; unfortunately he was fatally injured.”

Officials said they were able to extinguish the fire in about 20 minutes, but the single-family home was completely destroyed.

Fire Marshal John Devine said crews did not find any working smoke alarms at the scene and urged residents to make sure they and their loved ones have working alarms.
