Island Town deletes its x account against user data, misinformation problems

View Royal announced the course of January 29, Elon Musk, tariffs, 51 state conversation is quoted

View Royal disconnected its X -Oblkov recording because of anxiety about “misinformation” and how social media company manages users.

This step, which the city announced on January 29, came in the direction of the mayor of Tobias, who stated that he was concerned about the owner of the X Elon Musk, who uses the platform to “strengthen misinformation on the acquisition of Canada as 51 of the state and the imposition of tariffs on Canada.”

In the Black Press email, Tobias referred to a video on February 3, on which President Donald Trump referred to trade and possible annexation of Canada.

“Look what I would like to see: Canada will become our 51 state,” he said. “Why are we ready to lose $ 100 billion to $ 200 billion a year? We do not need them. As a condition, it’s different. ”

Tobias also made claims how X manages the user’s data.

“They can sell data at any time to someone,” he said. “This data can then be used to target users during elections at all levels of government or are used with AI to develop algorithms to target people who follow your account. Location data, preferences that the followers liked or not, everything is sold to someone who wants to buy it, including foreign influence. ”

View Royal decided to use Bluesky The X -like platform, created by the former Twitter CEO Jack Dori, to contact his inhabitants instead.

“Bluesky is safer than x for data because it uses a decentralized network that provides users with more control over their information, while X is a centralized platform that collects and monetize users data,” Tobias said.

The city will also continue to publish important information on its web site and platform engaging Engage.Viewroyal.ca. It still launches a Facebook page.

“The open character X provides a flat basis for misinformation (s) of polarization, which leads to calls in a constructive conversation,” Tobias said. “I would ask all of us to really consider what we consume and use regularly.”
