City Council La to protect unauthorized immigrants from deportation

City Council La to protect unauthorized immigrants from deportation

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a number of petitions designed to protect immigrants from the planned mass deportations of the Trump administration, including more funding for non -profit legal services and the general general campaign “Know their Rights”.

The proposals adhere to the decision of the Council in December to declare La for the sanctuary and come as immigration and customs execution of the United States, known as Ice, starts raids for the deportation of unauthorized immigrants across the country.

“This legislation sends a clear message: Los Angeles will not be a accomplice in the agenda of dehumanization of Trump-we will fight and defend our community,” said the Hugo Council Member of the Hugo Sotomartinez, who presented proposals.

He made a comment at the press conference before voting.

“My own parents were unbuzzled, and they built a life here without constant fear that going to work or going to school can break our family,” he said. “Each Angelana deserves the same safety and dignity.”

Suggestions

One proposal directs city officials to identify $ 540,000 within three months of financing the stop industry for legal services providers whose federal financing was frozen by the Trump administration.

For decades, the Ministry of Justice has financed legal programs to provide basic legal assistance to immigrants faced with deportation. Last week, the Department reported these legal services providers to “stop work immediately”, according to this request.

Another proposal asks officials to report expediency to require employers to inform city authorities about any federal raids or audit in Los -Angeles, will include a reporting schedule to provide public reports on when, where, and what industries are focused on ICE.

In addition, the proposal calls on the comprehensive campaign “Know their Rights” to use urban buildings and public partnerships to inform the residents of LAs about protection against immigration, the policy of non -discrimination and resolutions on the city’s sanctuary.

Protection of the city of sanctuary

In December, the city council made La for the sanctuary, forbidding urban resources to use for the use of federal law on immigration in the absence of a court order.

“We have to do more if we treat the city of sanctuary seriously,” said the Council Member Juniss Ernandez on Tuesday at a press conference.

Immigrant human rights activists applauded this effort.

“We live a nightmare,” said Marta Arealo, Executive Director of the Central Resource Center. “Our communities and immigrant families attack.”

“We will face incredibly difficult times, constant anti-migrant attacks and rapidly changing laws, but we will not stand,” she added.

Trump threatened to reduce federal funding for cities that did not cooperate with the efforts of ICE deportation, which could jeopardize the financing of fire assistance. These recent proposals can further complicate this funding.

One proposal calls for LAX to study the provision of seats for non -profit providers of legal services to support immigrants. It envisages future federal prohibitions on immigration or travel.

In his first term, Trump forbade the citizens of seven mainly Muslim countries to join the United States and endlessly suspended the entrance of Syrian refugees. Many immigrants remained on the verge of LAX without a legal representation.

So far, the federal authorities have not spent loud immigration raids since Trump’s accession in January, as it was in Chicago. But immigrant lawyers say their customers are experiencing.

“There is so much fear in the community now,” Sinty Anderson Barker said from the National Lawyers Guild. “These movements serve the purpose of” all hands on the deck “(i)” Let’s get involved in our city authorities. “

Some petitions will be returned to the city council for further consideration for several months.
