A new protected bike lane opens on Clark Street in River North

RIVER NORTH — A bustling stretch of Clark Street in River North now has a protected bike lane.

The bike lane is located on Clark Street South, between Grand Avenue and Oak Street. The a recently completed project adds another piece to Chicago’s expanding network of bike lanes, connecting existing bike lanes and providing a safer space for bicyclists, said Erica Schroeder, spokeswoman for the Chicago Department of Transportation.

Schroeder said the Clark Street bike lane complements the expansion of the northbound Dearborn Street protected bike lane from Kinsey Street to Chicago Avenue.

The lane has special traffic lights for cyclists at intersections and pedestrian-friendly features such as shelter islands and curbs.

The city plans to add 150 miles of bike lanes across the city over the next few years, prioritizing protected bike lanes and greenway neighborhoods.

More information about this and other ongoing bicycle infrastructure projects can be found on CDOT’s website website.
