Is There a Credit Card That Gets 5% Back at Costco?

Is There a Credit Card That Gets 5% Back at Costco?

When you’re trying to maximize your credit card rewards, Costco is a tricky beast. The Wholesale Club only accepts Visa cards, with the exception of many of the top cards, including Discover, American Express, and Mastercard.

The top Visa cards earn 2% and 3% at Costco, which isn’t bad. But if you’re looking for 5% back on a credit card, you’ll be disappointed to learn that there isn’t one that consistently earns that much.

And yet – still! — There is still hope. The two credit cards, while they don’t earn 5% back all the time, have rotating bonus categories that sometimes include wholesale clubs. None of the cards are Visa, but are accepted by Costco.com for higher cashback. Let’s take a look at both cards separately and see if they’re worth applying for.

1. Chase Freedom Flex

Chase Freedom Flex® has 5% bonus categories that change quarterly and must be activated (up to $1,500 in quarterly spending). Unlike Discover it® Cash Back, which we’ll discuss shortly, it has others cash back rates that make it a more complete credit card.

As a cardholder, you will receive cash in the following ways.

  • 5% back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate
  • 5% back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • 5% back on Lyft rides through March 31, 2025
  • 3% cashback on dining at restaurants, including takeout and orders through eligible delivery services
  • 3% back in pharmacies
  • 1% back on other purchases

These rates make the Chase Freedom Flex® a powerful card to have in your wallet. Click here to learn how you can earn a $200 bonus as a new cardholder.

Chase often includes wholesale clubs as a variable category. Because the Chase Freedom Flex® is a Mastercard, it is not accepted at Costco locations. But using the trick above, you can order your items on the Costco website where Mastercard is accepted.

2. Discover it® Cash Back

Discover it® Cash Back is one of the best credit card cash back on this planet. That may be an exaggeration, but few credit cards offer as much cash back as this one.

First, the card earns 5% back on bonus categories that change quarterly (up to $1,500 each quarter). You must activate them. If you maximize your spending in these categories, you can earn $75 every quarter or $300 every year. These often include purchases you already make, such as groceries, gas stations, and restaurants. And yes – earlier it also included wholesale clubs.

But the most exciting part of this card, in my opinion, is the welcome bonus. Discover will refund all the money you earned at the end of the first year. If you earn $300 in your first year, Discover will give you another $300 as a bonus. This offer is not guaranteed to last forever, so click here to learn more before Discover realizes how much money you can make and changes it.

As for Costco, again, the card has wholesale clubs as a category. Although you can’t use Discover in-store, Costco accepts it as a payment for online orders. This can help you earn 5% back at Costco as well as other wholesale clubs like Sam’s Club and BJ’s.

All in all, if you want to earn 5% at Costco, you don’t have many options. However, you maybe regularly earn up to 3% back on warehouses. If you’re not currently earning 2% to 3% at Costco on your credit card, you’re missing out.
