Los Angeles Dodgers win World Series in 5 games, overcome 5-run deficit with errors to beat New York Yankees 7-6

NEW YORK — The Los Angeles Dodgers won their second World Series championship in five seasons, overcoming a five-run deficit with the help of three Yankees defensive errors and rallying on sacrifice hits by Gavin Lux and Mookie Betts in the eighth inning to win New York is up 7-6 in Game 5 on Wednesday night.

Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. had back-to-back home runs in the first inning, Alex Verdugo’s RBI single chased Jack Flaherty in the second, and Giancarlo Stanton’s third-inning homer against Ryan Brassier gave the Yankees a 5-0 lead.

But errors by center fielder and shortstop Anthony Volpe, as well as pitcher Gerrit Cole’s failure to cover first on Betts’ grounder, helped Los Angeles score five unearned runs in the fifth.

After Stanton’s sacrifice bunt in the sixth inning put the Yankees back in front 6-5, the Dodgers loaded the bases against closer Tommy Cunley in the eighth before a sacrifice fly by Luke Weaver.

Blake Treinen escaped the jam in the bottom half by striking out Stanton on a fly out and striking out Anthony Rizzo.

Walker Buehler, making his first relief appearance since his rookie season in 2018, pitched a perfect ninth.
