MKCG Government Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Wednesday decided to suspend five fourth-year MBBS students from the hostel for six months for allegedly abusing their juniors, an official said.

The decision was taken on the recommendation of an anti-harassment committee, said Suchitra Dash, dean of the medical college.

The second-year MBBS student had alleged in a written complaint that he had suffered physical and mental injury due to ragging by senior students, the official said.

Three similar complaints have been lodged with the National Medical Council (NMC) by parents of some junior students staying in the hostel, he said.

The NMC then directed the college to conduct an inquiry and take necessary action, he added.

“After receiving the complaints from the NMC, we asked for the charge of our anti-robbery committee. But at first we couldn’t get any evidence of a cliff,” Dash said.

“When we received another written complaint from a second-year student on Monday, we re-examined and took this decision,” she said.

The dean said that students who were allegedly involved in the robbery would be barred from entering the hostel for six months.

“We cannot tolerate any incidents on campus and strict action will be taken against those involved,” she added.

SP Sarvan Vivek M said the dean lodged a complaint with the Baidyanathpur police station against the senior students who were involved in the robbery.

“We are looking into the matter and will take necessary action as per law,” said the SP, who is also a member of the anti-sinners committee.

In February, the medical college suspended two fourth-year MBBS students for two months for allegedly insulting a second-year student.
