Exposed: shocking inhumane working conditions in Sana shops – Malawi Nyasa Times

SANA Shops, one of Malawi’s largest retail chains, has come under fire for allegedly subjecting workers to inhumane working conditions. Reports obtained by Nyasa Times through interviews, letters and accounts of former and current employees reveal widespread abuse, exploitation and racism allegedly perpetrated by Indian owners.

According to the testimony, verbal abuse is common, with managers often using racist slurs and derogatory language against Malawian workers. “We work in conditions of constant humiliation,” said one former employee. “It’s a culture of fear and intimidation where we’re made to feel less than human.”

There have also been disturbing claims of sexual harassment, with female employees accusing senior staff of improper merit. Some victims claim they were forced to remain silent under threats of dismissal, leaving them vulnerable and defenseless.

Wages are another major concern, with many workers claiming to be paid less than the statutory minimum wage, despite working long and hard hours. Complaints of arbitrary pay cuts, lack of overtime pay and unsanitary working conditions further paint a bleak picture. “We work like slaves, but we are treated worse than animals,” lamented one current employee.

There seems to be no career advancement opportunities for Malawian workers and promotions are allegedly reserved for Indian staff regardless of their qualifications. “It’s like we don’t matter. No matter how hard we work, there is no chance of growth,” said another employee.

Unfair dismissals are reported to be common, where workers are fired without cause or due process. This, combined with a lack of employment benefits, has left many workers feeling trapped and exploited.

The working environment is also described as unsafe and unsanitary, with some workers forced to work long shifts without access to clean drinking water or proper protective equipment.

The Area 4 branch in Lilongwe was identified as one of the worst offenders and sources called on the authorities to investigate and prosecute the company.

Nyasa Times reached out to SANA Shops for comment but no response was received at the time of publication.
