The man who stole the cash 1 lakh from the house of a former board member a few days ago, who was absconding from the investigation, was looted by members of an “auto-rickshaw gang” in Agra on the same day, police said.

He has been identified as Ramana Kumar of Belanganj area in old Agra city. He approached the police to lodge a complaint about his robbery, but was instead identified as the accused in the theft at the house of Congress leader and former MP Azad Kumar. Cardamom Kumar and four members of the autorickshaw gang were jailed 40,000 were seized from them.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Suraj Rai said Kumar was working at Kardam’s house in New Raja Mandi Colony under Loha Mandi City Police Station.

“Raman Kumar allegedly stole 1 lakh in cash from an almirah at the former MLA’s house on January 13 and left the house with the stolen cash the next day. He hired an auto-rickshaw in Rambagh area but was trapped by auto-rickshaw gang members who took 75,000 from Kumar,” said Devendra Kumar Dubey, Superintendent of Police, Itimad-ud-Daula, Agra.

“Kumar lodged a complaint with the Itimad-ud-Daula police station and a case was registered against the incident on January 14. An investigation has been launched,” said Dabi.

However, the former MLA initially did not file a complaint of theft but reportedly knew that Kumar, who had started working at his house only on December 24, had stolen the cash.

It was only after he read media reports about the robbery of Raman Kumar that he contacted SHO Devendra Kumar Dubey and informed him about the theft at his house.

“Three members of the auto-rickshaw gang were arrested on Wednesday and the cash 20,000 were seized from them. The complainant, Raman, was initially not told that he had been identified as a thief but only told to return the cash and asked to come to the Itimad-ud-Daula police station. He was detained when he arrived,” the SHO reported.

“Another member of the gang was detained on Thursday. On Friday, all five appeared before the court and were sent to custody,” the SHO added.

Kumar allegedly bought a new phone and expensive alcohol with the stolen money. The rest of the amount was looted by the gang. In general, The police seized 40 thousand hryvnias.
