A suspected burglar has been arrested after police found him lying under a bed during a search of a house in Manchester.

Officers were patrolling the Moss Side and Rusholme areas when they saw a man behaving suspiciously while riding a bicycle just before 5pm on Wednesday.

One of the officers then followed the man to a house in nearby Boscombe Street before calling for help.

Officers entered the area and became suspicious that something was wrong when they entered one of the bedrooms.

Greater Manchester Police released body camera footage showing an officer turning over the mattress of a single bed in the corner of a room.

He then lifts the base of the bed to find a 41-year-old man hiding under it.

The footage then shows a police officer handcuffing the suspect, forcing him to lie on the floor.

GMP said the man is suspected of being a “serious criminal with a vested interest” who is believed to be responsible for a number of burglaries in the area.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and was in custody on Thursday before being questioned by police.

Police added that during a search of the property, they discovered a 36-year-old man who was wanted for unrelated crimes involving burglary, theft of a bicycle and returning to prison. He was arrested and is in custody.

Borough officers have been patrolling the Moss Side and Rusholme areas due to a large number of reports of burglaries in the area over the past couple of weeks.

Detective Inspector Natalie McDonald, from GMP’s Manchester Central Crime Squad, said: “This is a really great example of proactive policing. We were aware that there had been a local problem in the Rusholme and Moss Side areas over the last few weeks and we had to send officers out to patrol certain areas at times when we know burglaries are taking place.

“It shows that when we put officers in the right places at the right time, we see arrests of those who we think are messing up your neighborhoods.”
