State employees are stopped from being paid their salaries until they pay the fine

Government vehicles have emerged as major traffic violators in Lahore, prompting the authorities to consider stricter measures to curb the trend.

The new proposal proposes to withhold the wages of drivers in government offices until the fines are paid.

Chief Traffic Inspector (CTO) Atar Wahid floated the controversial idea of calculating fines based on social and financial status rather than the nature of the offence.

“The bigger the vehicle, the bigger the fine,” Waheed said, citing that luxury cars worth 50 million rupees should face fines 10 times the standard rates. “The police officers and traffic police vehicles violated the law the most.”

The initiative aims to improve road discipline and accountability, especially among government and law enforcement vehicles, which are reported to be the most frequent traffic violators.

In addition, the CTO announced a crackdown on beggars, especially those who force women and children to beg on the city’s roads.

“There is no place for beggars on the streets of Lahore,” Waheed said, adding that cases would be registered against violators.
