There are many others online word games now, but I still play at the New York Times Wordle game every day. Today, it’s not only an old friend, it’s also a good warm-up for Connections, Strands and others.

In addition, we ranked all letters of the alphabet by popularityif you want to use this list to choose the best starting words.

Daily Wordle Tips

I’ve written a lot about Wordle – with covering his 1000th word to my list the best words to start with to a a useful two-step strategy to news about controversial word changes. I even rounded what I learned from playing the popular online word puzzle game for a whole year. If you’re rethinking your need for a real answer, you might want to try some advice from one of these stories.

Still need an opening word? One person told me that they just look around and pick a five-letter item that they notice as a starting word, like SOFA or CHAIR. I tend to stick to beginning words that contain the most popular letters used in English words. I like TRAIN as a starter, although I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I read these people to use the financial term ROATEbut I like to use words that I actually know.

What is Wordle?

If you’ve read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback on whether the letters you guessed are in the puzzle or not, and whether they’re in the same place you guessed them. The New York Times bought the game from creator Josh Wardle for seven figures in 2022. Wardle created a game for his partner and allowed her to narrow down 12,000 five-letter English words to just 2,500, creating a database of answers. It was also convenient that he had a name that played the word.

A Times representative told me that the earliest Wordle on the list appeared on June 19, 2021, and the paper On March 15, she celebrated the 1000th word of the game. Spoiler alert: that 1,000th word was ERUPT. For example, “Dad will explode if Wordle is so strong that he loses his streak.”
