Carbon girls, Canyon View boys win 3A – Deseret News

Teammates Jaylee Jenkins and River White have pushed each other for three years, so it was only fitting that the future BYU teammates pushed each other to great heights in their high school’s final cross country race.

In the closest race of any state meet at Sugar House Park over the past two days, Jenkins edged White to the finish line to win the 3A state girls title by nine-tenths of a second. Jenkins finished in 17:48.74 and White finished in 17:48.83.

They finished second and fourth in the state last year, but on Wednesday they pushed each other to first and second.

“It was very close. I felt her on my back the whole time, and it was good because it pushed me,” Jenkins said. “It’s easy to let yourself go a little bit when there’s no one around, but especially with River as a teammate, we can push each other in practice, we practice every race, and it’s just been a game-changer for me.”

Both are high school seniors, and although the cross country season is now over, they will continue to push each other on the track during the high school season next spring before taking their talents to BYU.

In Class 3A, another college prospect ended his high school career with a bang.

After finishing third last season, Summit Academy’s Kaden McGovern ran away from the field Wednesday to take home the 3A boys title with a time of 15:35.51. Ogden’s Bradley Ekstrom finished second in 15:48.02.

“I did well and I was able to hold everyone off, so I’m happy with that,” said McGovern, who spoke to UVU.

The chase for the 3A boys and girls team titles was intense, and for 10-15 minutes after each heat, while the scores were being tallied, the athletes, coaches and spectators weren’t entirely sure how things would turn out.

Carbon coach Teliss Martak said it made for some very anxious moments, but when the results finally came in, the Dinos were able to celebrate their second 3A girls title in two years with a narrow win over Emery. Carbon finished with 91 points, followed by Emery with 96.

On the boys side, the Canyon View boys ended up repeating as 3A champions, winning with 72 points. Grantsville finished second with 84 points, followed by Carbone in third with 103 points.

Canyon View coach Kirk Lovell believes the experience the team gained last year during its first state title in school history paid dividends a year later.

“Their experience from last year made this year a lot better, so when we had those down periods like losing the region by a point, we had some tough races, but they were all OK and said we can do it, we can come back and have the best record in the state,” Lovell said.

Thomas Daniels was Canyon View’s top individual finisher in third, while Logan Handley finished fourth, Jar Findlay 12th, Nathaniel Callison 17th and William Heaton 36th. Each spot was crucial in holding off Grantsville for a repeat title.

Lovell said Daniels is the glue that holds everything together.

“Thomas Daniels, this kid lives and breathes running and it’s easy to coach someone who loves stats and positions. And then he leads the team,” Lovell said.

Rounding out the top five for the boys is Morgan’s EJ Lee in fifth.

In the girls race, behind Jenkins and White, Carbon’s Roslyn Stowe, Emery’s Addison Guymon and Emery’s Hentry Christiansen rounded out the top five.

The Carbon coach had high praise for Stowe and her third-place finish, as the defending state champion was still recovering from a season-long track injury until mid-September. The 3A state meet was her third major meet of the year.

“She just wanted to be in the top 10. She knew she didn’t have as much mileage as those girls,” Martak said.

Stowe’s third-place finish, along with freshman Josie Yates’ seventh-place finish, were vital to the team’s success.

“We just competed amazingly. They kept moving uphill in that last mile. Everyone ran hard and everyone is coming back, no one finishes,” added Martak.

Other Carbon runners to score for the Dinos were Ellie Breiner in 21st, Kaylee Pitcher in 31st and Brattley Kennedy in 36th.

Each improved a few spots in that stretch, which Martak said was key to holding off an Emery team that had three top-10 runners in Addison Guymon, Gentry Christiansen and Addie Hurst.
