Severe frost on Sunday morning

Severe frost on Sunday morning

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – As temperatures possibly drop into the low 20s, we have First notification for black ice again on Sunday morning. You should assume that anything that looks wet on the roads will be ice. Be careful on roads with less traffic and around bridges, overpasses and exits. Temperatures will likely start in the low to mid 20s Sunday morning, with some areas in Marion, Winston, Cullman, Blount, Etowah and Cherokee counties in the low twenties. A little ‘ice fog’ may also develop in our northern counties overnight, so continue to take care when traveling on the roads as this phenomenon can make the roads even more slippery. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and will warm up considerably. We should see a faster rate of melting in this area as temperatures climb into the 40s. South wind, 5-10 m/s.

The next big thing: Our next cold front is forecast to move through the area on Monday. A weak low along the Gulf may spread a few showers to areas south of I-20 Sunday night into Monday morning. Temperatures will probably be above freezing, so I don’t expect any problems on the roads. There is a small chance that we will see cold rain mixed with sleet, but that’s about it. We’ll retain a 20-30% chance of showers early Monday morning with temperatures in the mid-30s. Pickens, Sumter, Greene, Gale, Bibb, Chilton, Coosa and Talladega counties will likely have the best chance to see a few showers. Monday is likely to start cloudy and finish sunny with temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. It will eventually be a bit windy as northerly winds return, bringing another round of cold air to Central Alabama. Temperatures are likely to drop into the low 20s on Tuesday morning.

A cool week ahead: Next week is expected to be dry and cool. We’ll likely see highs in the upper 40s, with overnight lows in the low to mid 20s. Next Friday, we may see a brief warm-up as a new cold front approaches the region. Our next chance to see showers will likely be next Friday into Saturday night. Next Friday and Saturday, temperatures may briefly rise to average with highs in the low to mid 50s. By January 19-21, another round of colder air is likely to return.
