‘I was helpless’: A witness to a fatal crash in Thornton has described the tragic scene

THORNTON, Colo. — Delia Luevanos was on her way to a Halloween party Saturday night when she witnessed a crash that killed four family members at an intersection.

“I drive this road every day,” Louevanos said. “I was at a traffic light, suddenly I see a black car speeding past.”

After noticing the black Subaru speeding past her, Luevanos said the next few moments were a shock. The Subaru struck the rear of the SUV, sending both vehicles about 25 feet into the intersection, she said. In a few seconds Luevanos saw an explosion and a huge flame.

“When the explosion happened, the black car literally jumped,” Louevanos said. “It was traumatic to watch.”

Daniel Diaz, 22, and brother Adam, 20, confirmed to Denver7 last weekend that their parents, Francisco Diaz and Beatrice Nunez, and sisters, Paola, 15, and Natalie, 10, were killed in the crash as they headed to Walmart to get groceries.

The Thornton Police Department said the family was stopped at a red light on Washington Street North at Thornton Parkway around 7:30 p.m. Saturday when the driver of a black Subaru crashed into the family’s Ford SUV.

Police said the crash caused the Ford’s gas tank to rupture, sparking the fire.

Daniel said that he received an SOS message on his iPhone that his sister Natalya had an accident.

“I get a message — a notification on my phone that my little sister has been in an accident,” Daniel said. – That’s when I ran out. I went to my car. I called my brother.”

When Daniel and Adam arrived at the scene, they saw flames and quickly realized the worst.

“I got to see my dad in the driver’s seat,” Adam told Denver7. “Once I saw that he was there and he wasn’t moving, that’s when I knew.”

Louevanos said that after the accident, her husband and bystanders tried to help the family. Unfortunately, she said the location of the black Subaru jammed the doors and they were unable to help the family escape.

In addition, she said that the flames quickly engulfed the car, making rescue impossible.

“I was helpless, there were many people trying to help, but there was nothing we could do,” Louevanos said.

Although she was unable to help the family, Louevanos said she spoke with several family members after the accident. She tried to comfort them and is speaking to the police in hopes of helping the investigation.

“I told them it happened instantly,” Louevanos said. “Their loved ones were not injured.”

If you want to help Adam and Daniel, their family set up a GoFundMe page. So far, they have raised over $100,000 to provide the brothers with financial stability and emotional support.
