The woman’s last farewell to her father was filmed at the Winnipeg airport

A woman is expressing her deep gratitude to Winnipeg Richardson International Airport after staff helped her recover a video of her last moments with her father.

“I think it’s a great reminder that there are really good people in this world and the kindness of strangers can go such a long way for someone,” said Megan Cyr, who is originally from St. Andrews, Maine, but now lives in Calgary, Alta. .

“It means more now than when I first got it.”

The story goes back to December 28, 2020, when Megan was supposed to leave Manitoba and return to Calgary.

However, she misread her departure time, thinking it was 7pm instead of 7am, causing her to miss her flight at the Winnipeg airport.

Meghan rebooked her flight to return to Calgary the next day, giving her an extra evening to spend with her father, Curtis Cyr.

Curtis drove her to the airport the next morning.

Megan was worried that the 12 homemade breakfast burritos she packed in her carry-on would be confiscated during security, so her dad went inside to make sure the food wasn’t wasted.

When the burritos went through the scanner, Megan gave her dad a thumbs up and continued on her journey.

That was the last time she saw her father alive. He died of a heart attack on January 3, 2021.

A few days later, Megan had a clear memory of her last goodbye to her father at the airport.

She decided to contact the Winnipeg airport to see if they had a video recording of her last moments with her dad, knowing it might be long-term.

“I think it’s pretty rare that someone gets a recording or footage of them saying goodbye to their loved one,” she said.

“It’s often only reserved for people who can predict someone’s death or who have been ill for a while, so I just thought it would be out of this world to get this footage.”

From there, Megan received updates from airport staff every few days as they worked to find the video.

On January 20, 2021, she was presented with footage of her last moments with her father.

“It was better than I could have expected and definitely a huge gift that I can really appreciate even more four years later because the grief has softened a little and I can see what was good in the darkest times of my life. life,” she said.

The minute-long video clearly shows Meghan and Curtis saying goodbye before she goes through security. The footage shows Meghan talking to her father and hugging him twice.

Meghan said the video serves as a reminder of the love she shared with her father, adding that it has helped her a lot in her grieving process.

“As you get deeper into grief, it becomes harder to remember and feel what it was like to be with that person,” she said.

“I think this video captures the relationship between my father and my father. To have this memory with me forever and I know it will never go away and I can never forget it because it’s a physical reminder and I can look at it. It’s just incredible.”

Megan said it’s been four years, but now she wants to share her story to remind people of all the good in the world.

“Loss and grief is a wonderful, heartbreaking way to bring people together and feel seen and understood by someone you don’t even know,” she said.

“So I just felt it was the right time to share this and hopefully bring people together to know that they are not alone and that there are still wonderful people in this world doing really good things for the people they they don’t know.”

As for the Winnipeg airport staff who helped her get the video, Megan said there are no words to describe her gratitude and appreciation.

Saying “thank you” just doesn’t match her feelings.

“The fact that they went out of their way to get me is just an incredible act of kindness,” she said.

“I will be grateful for this video for the rest of my life.”
