“Don’t stand there like a coward”

After pro-Palestinian the activist snapped Tom YorkAt a solo performance on Oct. 30 in Melbourne, Australia, fans captured video of the rock legend yelling at a protester.

“Come and say it,” said York. “Get on the damn stage and say what you want to say. But don’t stand there like a coward, come here and say it. Come on.” He added: “Do you want to wet everyone for the night? come on ok you know See you later then,” before leaving the stage.

Reddit users noted that the incident happened at the end of the night, and that Yorke returned soon after to finish the set with “Karma Police”. Watch the video below.

The protester’s goals were not immediately clear, but it may have been related to the history of York and Radiohead’s concerts in Israel. In 2017, Radiohead performed in Tel Aviv, defying an unofficial cultural boycott that dates back to around 2005. At the time, artists including Roger Waters, Thurston Moore and Tunde Adebimpe criticized decision. York defended himself, saying, “We don’t support Netanyahu any more than we support Trump, but we’re still playing America.” York’s teammates only returned to Israel earlier this year when Jonny Greenwood performed plays in Tel Aviv. Greenwood is also married to Israeli artist Sharon Katani, whose family lost a nephew who served in the Israel Defense Forces during Israel’s war against Hamas.

While many artists continue to support the cultural boycott of Israel, others question its effectiveness. Nick Cave in August said“Obviously it’s not working.”
