BSF jawans repel an attack by Bangladeshi smugglers in Bengal’s Malda

Border Security Force (BSF) jawans in West Bengal’s Malda district were forced to fire in self-defence after a group of Bangladeshi smugglers attacked them with sharp weapons while trying to smuggle contraband across the border.

The incident took place on the morning of Saturday, January 11, at the Nawad border post. According to the message of the Black Sea Fleet, around 2:10 a.m., duty officers noticed the movement of 15-20 smugglers near the border fence. Some were from the Indian side of the fence, while others came from the Bangladeshi side.

Despite the warning, the smugglers advanced aggressively, flashing high beam torches at the Javanese to block their view. The group also attacked with sharp weapons and sticks.

After two live rounds failed to deter the attack, the jawans fired two live rounds in self-defence, forcing the smugglers to retreat.

A further search of the area led to the discovery of 572 bottles of contraband Phensedyl cough syrup, as well as a sharp weapon and a high beam flashlight. Officials do not rule out that during the incident there are victims among the smugglers.

Similar smuggling and infiltration attempts were reported at other border outposts in Malda and Murshidabad districts, including Nandanpur, Farjipara, Harinathpur and Churiyantpur.

In these cases, the Black Army soldiers used stun grenades and non-lethal weapons to prevent smugglers. Among the seized items were illegal drugs, five head of cattle and other contraband, which were handed over to local authorities.

Employees of the Black Sea Front reported the incidents to local police stations and handed over the seized items to the relevant authorities.
