Two were arrested for attempting to kill a 74-year-old man over a temple land dispute

Trichy: Trichy city police charged two persons in attempted murderassault and intimidation after a video of them threatening a 74-year-old man was shared on social media.
The accused, who was identified as S. Rajkumar of Thandankorai in Lalgudi village and his unidentified accomplice allegedly attacked T. Devarajana, a retired clerk, outside a teahouse in Srirangam on January 6.
It is reported that the incident happened due to a dispute encroachment on the ground of the temple. Rajkumar and four others had illegally occupied 4,000 square feet of land belonging to Siddhi Vinayagar temple run by HR&CE in Thandankorai, police said. After their eviction by the temple authorities, hostility grew against Devarajan, whom the accused suspected of reporting the molestation.
According to the complaint filed by the temple’s executive officer Punitha, the accused intercepted Devarajan outside a tea shop at Panjakkarai in Srirangam. The video shows a machete-wielding man threatening him with dire consequences while hurling caste-based slurs. A frightened Devarajan begged for mercy as bystanders watched.
Police investigations revealed that the accused had an encounter with Devarajan earlier that day. Fearing for his safety, he tried to reach his daughter on a moped. They stopped him and attacked him publicly, claiming that the police would not respond to any complaint.
The Srirangam police have registered a case against the accused for verbal abuse, unlawful restraint, causing bodily harm, attempt to murder and sharing a video of the attack on social media.
