The Internet erupted with reaction after a video of former US President Barack Obama sharing smiles and talking with US President-elect Donald Trump at the funeral of their predecessor Jimmy Carter in Washington. Social media was also riveted on the reaction of US Vice President Kamala Harris after she returned and saw Obama and Trump talking.

Right-wing author Oli London, who posted the video, said Trump’s challenger in the last election looked “irritated.” Alistair Clisham, a member of the Conservative Party of Great Britain and Canada, said: “Kamala Harris is hated and shunned by everyone. Soap”.

At the church, Trump sat next to Obama and the two were seen having a long conversation, exchanging smiles before the program began. Former First Lady Michelle Obama was noticeably absent.

Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff arrived and took their seats in the front row.

Trump also shook hands with former Vice President Mike Pence and had a lengthy conversation with Obama during President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral on Thursday.

The service, held at the Washington National Cathedral, brought together all five current US presidents to honor Carter, the 39th president of the United States, who died in late December at the age of 100.

Carter, a Democrat, was seen by many as naive and weak during his single term from 1977 to 1981, but over the years a more nuanced view has emerged, focusing on his decency and foreign policy achievements.

Carter’s flag-draped coffin was moved from the US Capitol, where it had lain in state, and carried into the vast cathedral by an honor guard of military personnel in ceremonial uniform.

His grandson Joshua Carter delivered the first sermon to the last president of the Greatest Generation.
